Did You Get a Good Night’s Sleep?

[su_dropcap style=”default” size=”3″ class=””]A[/su_dropcap]ccording to a “2012 Bedroom Poll” conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, almost 60% of Americans did not have a good sleep last night and will not get a good night’s sleep tonight. Shockingly enough, almost a quarter of Americans will get at best a few good night’s of sleep each month, some none at all. On average, American receive less than the recommended 7 – 9 hours of sleep each night on weekdays or work nights.

According to a Gallup study, this is having a clear impact on employee engagement at work, with an estimated $350 billion in lost productivity each year. And while on the weekends, Americans average just over 7 hours of sleep each night, an inconsistent sleeping pattern can lead to a disruption to our natural circadian rhythm. This can cause a domino effect on our sleep cycles during the work week.

While everyone recognizes the importance of the standard 7 – 9 hours of a good night’s sleep, come may be interested to know what people felt was important to getting good sleep. So, what did NSF respondents rate as essential elements of their sleeping experience? Here are the results:

  • Comfortable mattress (93%)
  • Comfortable pillows (91%)
  • Comfortable sheets and bedding (86%)
  • Quiet room (74%)
  • Dark room (73%)
  • Cool room temperature (67%)
  • Fresh air (63%)
  • Clean bedroom (62%).
  • Relaxing bath or shower, just before bed (29%)
  • Sleep aid (12%)

So, what can we learn from these results? Comfort is king, which is why sleep is a multi-billion dollar industry. Americans will pay up for the opportunity of a good night’s sleep. Noise, light, and temperature are all also critical factors in preserving sleep. Interestingly, twelve percent of Americans rely on an over-the-counter or prescription sleep aid to sleep. Not a surprise, as we know that we are an over-medicated culture and the value of a good night’s sleep can be worth the risk to some. However, many Americans and sleep sufferers around the world underestimate the effectiveness of a few behavioral tools, tips, and tricks that improve sleep wellness, without self-medicating.

    Wow, I never knew about these percentages. I try getting my 8 hours but its cool to see some stats on what influences the sleep!
